Answers:

  1. Does the PI get confirmation that National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) received their application?

The PI will receive an automatic e-mail confirmation that the application was received. The same system is in place for the full grant application. Please contact ctreadwell@braintumor.org if you have any questions.

  2. Does the PI have to be a U.S. or Canadian citizen?

No, NBTS RFAs are now open to the international community.

  3. Can a PI submit more than one application per grant cycle?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of applications that a PI and/or an institution can submit per grant cycle. However, an application can only be submitted to one grant program, i.e. the same application cannot be submitted to both the Advanced Grant program and the Innovation Grant program.

  4. Does a PI have to request the total amount?

No, the amount requested is at the PI's discretion but cannot exceed the maximum amount of the grant award.

  5. Who can receive salaries from the grant?

Any person working on the proposed project can receive a salary from the grant. The amount is left to the PI's discretion.

  6. Regarding Research Grant Applications: Does the page limit for Section II A-D mean a total of 3 pages for the entire section or 3 pages per section?

Sections II A-D must total three pages. The three page limit does not refer to each individual subsection. Please note that tables, charts and any supporting data can be placed in the appendix.

  7. Regarding Research Grant Applications: What can be included in the 15-page appendix?

The appendix can include any material the PI believes will support the proposed research project. This includes charts, graphs, figures, manuscripts, letters of support, etc.

  8. When will PIs be contacted regarding funding?

PIs will be contacted in August regarding the status of their grant application.

  9. What are the procedures if there are changes in the budget, staff, etc. after the grant has been awarded?

The Director of Research must be notified in writing of any changes in the projects budget, staff, etc. to determine the significance of any such change. The request will receive immediate attention.

  10. What are the procedures if the PI moves the research project to a new institution?

The Director of Research must be notified in writing immediately. Letters requesting and authorizing the move must be submitted from the previous institution, the PI and the new institution, respectively. A final accounting statement must also be submitted from the original institution. The request will receive immediate attention.

  11. What are the procedures to request a no-cost extension?

PIs must submit a written request for a no-cost extension detailing why such a request is necessary. A statement from the Accounting Department must be included to show the current status of the project's finances, as well as a revised budget for the proposed extension.

  12. What if the PI's NBTS project overlaps with a project that is being funded, or an application for funding submitted to another organization?

NBTS requires full, timely disclosure regarding potential financial and/or intellectual overlapping grant applications/projects. The required disclosure will not affect a grant's scientific review or consideration. As NBTS does not provide overlapping funds, receipt of an overlapping grant award will impact the level of funding awarded. However, NBTS will provide the maximum benefit possible. Failure to disclose the required information in a timely manner will result in an administrative disqualification of an application or the withdrawal of a grant award.
