Funded Research & Accomplishments
Since 1992, the National Brain Tumor Society has supported brain tumor research by directly funding grants itself, as well was collaborating with other funding organizations on various projects, including: the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), The Bridge Project, and the Brain Tumor Funders’ Collaborative, and the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

- MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston has received the most individual grants at 22
- 68% of the grants went to adult brain tumor research, while 22% went to pediatric brain tumor research
- The largest percentage of the grants (59%) went to the study of malignant gliomas (astrocytoma, brain stem glioma; DIPG, glioblastoma multiforme, oligodendroglioma, etc.) – the most dangerous brain tumors – and the rest were spread out among other tumor types
To-date, research funded by the National Brain Tumor Society has contributed to the establishment of many of what are now the top adult and pediatric brain tumor research labs across the country, as well advances in understanding of what drives to tumors to form and grow, and what biological markers could be targets for treatment. Our research initiatives, including Mary Catherine Calisto Systems Biology Initiative, Molecular Profiling, Developmental Neurobiology, and funded projects in genomics, epigenetics, immunotherapies, proteomics, and stem cell biology have led to a number of clinical trials, as well as the overall knowledge-base of the brain tumor field today.
Our Funding Strategy
National Brain Tumor Society funds grants for both academic and industry researchers who have promising programs designed to advance potential therapies from research into clinical trial. All funding is open to domestic and international researchers and institutions.
