Head to the Hill 2014

May 5 - 6, 2014

On Tuesday, May 6th, 2014, brain tumor advocates from across the country converged on Capitol Hill to share their stories and advocate for public policy issues that are important to the brain tumor community. This year’s fourth-annual Head to the Hill Advocacy Day was our largest to date, with 135 advocates from 30 states attending 156 meetings with members of Congress or their staff.

We are already seeing the results of the work of our advocates, with a growing list of new co-sponsors supporting both legislation that would ensure affordable access to oral chemotherapy treatments, including temozolozmide (brand name - Temodar), the standard of care treatment for many types or brain tumors, as well as legislation to improve conditions for pediatric cancer research. We expect this number to continue to rise as advocates follow up from their meetings and continue to build relationships with these offices throughout the year.

We remain in awe of the ability of our brain tumor advocates to share their inspirational stories in a way that directly relates to the need for further medical research, oral chemotherapy parity, or pediatric research. To read more about the issues the advocates were discussing with Congress, check out our 2014 Legislative Agenda.

Here is what some of our brain tumor advocates had to say about Head to the Hill 2014:

"The feeling of possibly making a difference in any small manner gave us a chance to feel we are doing something good in our son’s memory."

"Since losing my dad 2 years ago to a GBM, you and these type of activities have given me some hope in a situation that at the time felt completely hopeless. I know the work I do can't bring dad back, but hopefully it can make things better for the other warriors, survivors, caretakers, and their families."

If you weren’t able to join us this year, we hope you will consider being a part of Head to the Hill next year on May 4 & 5, 2015. Save the date now to be a part of this powerful day of action.

Your participation in these meetings helped policymakers better understand the critical needs of this community, and the policies that are vital to ensure availability of treatments, increased scientific research and the discovery of a cure.
